Edelweisse Posted March 26, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 26, 2017 Hi Folks: I recently attended a local estate sale and purchased a US Army CSM grouping that died in a helicopter crash in Dec 1970. In the group were some VC items such as a French mess kit, a canteen with a bullet hole in it and two VC flags. I also bought a large group of pictures and in a few pictures they showed these items hanging on the wall in his bunker sleeping area. I also bought some medals, patches, award certificates (Purple Heart, Air Medals, etc..) a camo jacket and trouser set, some Bonnie caps, another camp Bonnie cap (?) and a lot of his orders. In the group are telegrams about his death, a letter signed by GEN Westmoreland, another letter signed by the Secretary of the Army and a letter signed by President Nixon to his wife. I also found many military pictures to include to include the purchase of a VW Beetle in 1963 for approx. $1300 I missed out of the VC Sun Helmet which a dealer bought. I couldn't find his Purple Heart. He served in the US Army from 1948 until his death...interesting career Soldier and Hero

smwinter207 Posted March 26, 2017 Share #9 Posted March 26, 2017 Fantastic group. I particularly like the fedora style hat. Did some reading on where his helicopter crashed in the Mang Yang Pass. This was a site of many ambushes and a famous 1954 French defeat. Thanks for sharing.

Edelweisse Posted April 10, 2017 Author Share #24 Posted April 10, 2017 Thank you for the additional info about the crash. After reading it......WOW...I can't imagine seeing the crash.....since I was at the 1988 Ramstein AB Air show. His wife passed away and the estate was sold.......and I'll be getting his other medals when I get back from leave in Germany. I can't imagine how his wife felt......this must have ripped her apart...but she must have been strong.
