ccyooper Posted March 21, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 21, 2017 They are size markings. S - Small U - Universal L - Large. I believe 1-5 was used on early masks and I am not familiar with UL but I presume Universal Large? Not by any means an export on these. I wore a U my entire service career. I believe there is a good book that documents the ins and outs of US gas masks from WWI to post WWII. The author was at the SOS and had a nice display set up. DukeNougat3d Posted January 20, 2019 Share #4 Posted January 20, 2019 I am not familiar with UL but I presume Universal Large? Not by any means an export on these. I wore a U my entire service career. The 'UL' Stamp is on the M7 Carrier of an M5-11-7 Army Assault Gas Mask. The 'U' does in fact refer to 'Universal' Size, but the 'L' refers to the position of the canister on the side of the mask. In this case, the carrier is marked for a canister on the left side of the facepiece to accomodate light-handed shooters. A mask with a canister on the right side for left-handed shooters would be labelled 'UR'. Hope that clears things up.
