Charlie Flick Posted March 19, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2017 Gentlemen: I had a chance today to take a few pics of some machetes in the collection. I picked this one to post on as it has always been something of a mystery to me. It is the 22 inch blade marked machete made by C.V. Manufacturing Company of Cleveland, Ohio. That company has always eluded me. I have never been able to locate any info on that outfit. M.H. Cole identified these machetes as US Navy Mark 2 machetes. They certainly fit the profile of the Mark 2, but are not marked USN or US.
Charlie Flick Posted March 19, 2017 Author Share #2 Posted March 19, 2017 The machete resides in a well made US marked leather scabbard designed for the 22" blade. The back side of the scabbard. The scabbard marking showing it was made by ALPCO in 1942. ALPCO was the trade name of the Atchison Leather Products Co., Inc. located in Atchison, Kansas. It made a number of different leather products for the military including M1916 holsters. (Yeah, I know that I should have cleaned that verdigris off before I took the pics.....) Has anyone ever developed any further information on C.V. Mfg. Co.? I'd like to know who they were, how many of these machetes they made and what their business was before they got into the edged weapon/tool business. And, of course, whatever happened to them? 'Flage Guy Posted March 19, 2017 Share #3 Posted March 19, 2017 Never seen that manufacturer before; cool!I've got a couple of these, but they are stamped "US" and dated '42 by Legitimus Collins; also, the pommel end of the grips are square, rather than the "padeye" style. That's a super-nice Scabbard.
ccyooper Posted March 20, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 20, 2017 I have seen a few of these and some I have seen have come with a USN scabbard. I have not pin pointed the company either but I have sort of thought it might be Chagrin Valley MFG, but while there was a lot of production in that area, I have not located a true company with that name, but I have not looked that hard either. tankerman Posted March 22, 2017 Share #5 Posted March 22, 2017 My C.V. machete is stamped U.S. N. above the markings in small letters. I know of one other marked in this way.
Charlie Flick Posted March 23, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted March 23, 2017 My C.V. machete is stamped U.S. N. above the markings in small letters. I know of one other marked in this way. That is pretty cool, tankerman. Would you mind posting a pic of the marking, please? Your example is the first I have heard of with the USN marking. Thanks. tankerman Posted March 24, 2017 Share #7 Posted March 24, 2017 Charlie; wish I could post a CV photo. However, photo sizing/posting "challenged"..to put it mildly.
