Picked up this shirt because of the cloth CIB, but it has a nice patch as well. CIB and SSI are both hand sewn on shirt. CIB is theater made. It had a combat patch at one time, a few threads remain on the right sleeve. Ink lettering inside the collar reads "M7416" I believe, very faded.

I'm curious if the "thundering herd" tab is theater made as well.

The tab sure looks TM to me, that is a great CIB..

I was thinking the same thing. "Government issue" patch with a "theater made" tab.

I can't remember when the army officially authorized "nicknames" for the armored divisions but I thought it wasn't until after WWII. I know the practice was common during the war but I had always thought it was a technically non-reg modification but was usually winked at by commanders (kind of like "nose art" on aircraft) since it boosted morale and esprit-de-corps.

My first active duty assignment after training was to HHC 1st Armored division, "Old Ironsides." In the Division HQ everything was "iron" this and "iron" that. For example, Instead of "sergeant's time" it was called "Iron time training." When they let us out early on Thursdays it was for "Iron family time."

1st Armored took over the cantonments of the old 4th Armored division from WWII. AFAIK 4th AD was the only armored division that never got a "nickname." I've even seen unauthorized patches where the 4th Armored div triangle has a tab underneath that read "NO NAME." :D
