Big Knife

Picked this knife up this weekend at an estate sale. It has a brass guard and aluminum handle, with a leather sheath with the knots that I think are associated with the Navy and/or Marines. The blade has seen obvious use in a humid/salty climate, and has been cleaned up and sharpened leaving pitting all over the thin blade. The knife is amazingly light and would be easy to use to hack down jungle vines and foliage. It feels very good in the hand with the finger grooves and thickness just right. It certainly has the been there done that look.

As for the sheath, if someone has more information on who (Navy, Marine, etc.) would have made the knots like this, I would be interested in reading their observations.

This is commonly referred to as a "Turkshead" knot. Old decretive knot, very common to be used by sailors, but most any Boy Scout also learned to weave these.
