mdk0911 Posted March 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2017 I just got this cartridge box - This box features a hook attached to the top with a riveted leather loop not sure what the loop was for - Civil War trial pattern? Makers mark on inside flap reads "E. METZGER PHLDA". Inspectors stamp, also on inside flap, reads "H.H. HARTZELL U.S ORD. DEPT. SUB INSPECTOR". M24 Chaffee Posted March 13, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2017 That's a very nice complete cartridge box! I wouldn't know about the extra hook modification. It wouldn't be a box typically used by cavalry. Maybe a post war addition? Frank
Lee Ragan Posted March 13, 2017 Share #3 Posted March 13, 2017 Looks like an Infantry box to me. This style of cartridge box went out of use soon after the War Between the States as the Army quickly switched over to breech loaders which used different design boxes which in turn were soon replaced by prairie belts. As for the hook, I have no idea.
iron bender Posted March 25, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 25, 2017 The box is 64 pattern. Addition of the the brass hook is immediate postwar for a carrying strap. That's a really nice cartridge box. Great pickup!
