338thRCT Posted March 11, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2017 Found these at the flea market this morning. A 1916 dated document from the HQ American Expeditionary Forces Training Division. At first glance I thought it would be addressing land mines and booby traps, but after looking into it, saw that it was talking about mine-shafts and the tunneling beneath the enemy's trench positions in order to place explosives and then blow them creating havoc and and a sudden gap through which they could advance. This was written by the French and had already been tried by all the opposing forces on the western front with limited results.( One mine failed to detonate and sat dormant until the 1950's before exploding) Also is a few pages dated January 1918 which describes types and uses of hand grenades. There was a nice large map dated 1913 of the Dijon region of France. Very neat bits of history!

338thRCT Posted March 11, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted March 11, 2017 A paragraph from part of the manual shows how this type of warfare was being addressed.
