30-Cal Posted March 11, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2017 Did Utica make a 6 groove with a plastic spacer? Does this pass the sniff test?

30-Cal Posted March 11, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted March 11, 2017 I was hoping you'd see this, Skip. What is your opinion on this? I really appreciate it. Thank you
SKIPH Posted March 11, 2017 Share #6 Posted March 11, 2017 30-Cal- Have never seen a WW2 era Utica w/ any spacers, nor pictures of. Also when Utica was making most of the 6 groove they used a "sunburst" staking pattern to attach the pommel. The pommel is just way off for a Utica peening, or staking. Is it guard stamped US M3 UTICA? I have two Utica M4s, w/o spacers, and have never seen one, w/ any color spacer, so that kind of takes the knife off the post war "assembled from left over parts " theory. It does appear to be a decent, functional M3, just not original. GD Mortarman says he has one, would like to see pics and compare. Would be interesting to see if more were produced. But, during WW2 only Imperial used spacers on their M3s.
SKIPH Posted March 11, 2017 Share #7 Posted March 11, 2017 Looking at the pommel picture again, I find the 3 stampings of the ordinance bomb interesting. Size looks about right, but w/o digging out all my Uticas, I believe they were stamped, (for the most part) above or below the thin part of the tang, not the side. 30-Cal Posted March 11, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted March 11, 2017 Thanks SkipH! We're really lucky to have you here in the forums, you're a wonderful resource! I agree that this one is just not right. I think you're right about the location of the ordnance stamps on the Uticas. I also think the stamps look a little thin and suspect? I'll take more pictures when I get the time but pretty sure this one is not original and may have dishonest markings. Thanks again.
SKIPH Posted March 11, 2017 Share #9 Posted March 11, 2017 30-Cal- I'm no expert on anything, I just like to collect, and pass on what I've observed. I constantly learn here on the forum like everyone else. This is a nice site to come to for edged weapons collectors, everyone is friendly and we all want to learn.
