I have two mid-50s named Coast Guard Good Conduct Medals in my collection that

were sand blasted to a matt finish prior to engraving, to include the top bars.

The medal to O.'L.O.U.G.H.L.I.N was awarded for the Port Security Unit Boston, Jan. 18, 1954.

A.D.Y. GCM for service aboard the Cutter McLane, Nov. 4, 1955.

A.D.Y.'S. medal is the nicest engraving I have seen on a post WW2 Coast Guard GCM.

Anyone else have a sand blasted C.G. GCM in your collection ?

Wharf,

This is very interesting. Was this something done as a personal preference? Was it unauthorized?

Hi Kat.

My guess this was official, only because I have two from the same time period. However, I hope someone will post another example to confirm it.

I always thought this was there way of "cleaning" the old spotty/tarnished planchet's that had been sitting around. Makes me crazy! Like polishing a rare coin.

Since more than one person has examples, does that mean it was officially done to the medals?

This is very interesting. Thanks for posting! ...Kat

Both medals were engraved after they were sandblasted. The letters are shiny from the graver, if sandblasted after engraving everything would have the same texture.

Hi Wharf!

I hope you're doing well.

I have a couple that have a "rough" feel to their finish, I never gave it much thought until I saw your thread. VERY interesting!

Thanks for posting this info!

Best wishes,

Joe

Hey Wharf!

Great to be back! You always start intriguing threads and when I saw this one I knew just what you meant by sandblasted! They even have a rough feel. Hopefully we'll see more examples posted! I'll dig and see if I have any others.

Kat knows me well and was 100% correct that I'd see this post!

Thank you for getting it going.

My best to you!

Joe
