jeffs1130 Posted March 9, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 9, 2017 Hi All! I need some help finding more information about the Officer named on these Dog Tags... Normally I'm good at finding information, however this one is tough! Roy J. Archer O-1587814 I found a "Roy Joseph Archer" on Find A Grave! He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army during WWII & KW and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Not sure if this is the same Roy Archer, but it's the only one I've found! I also found a newspaper article from 1948 stating a Captain R. J. Archer was married in Japan to a Miss Jane Richardson of Gastonia, North Carolina. I know there are forum members out there who have access to Army Officer books and are experts at finding information! Any additional information on this Officer would be greatly appreciated! I would really like to find unit/division information if possible. Thanks -Jeff-
zsmith Posted March 9, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 9, 2017 The Roy J Archer on those dog tags retired as a LTC in 1962. That could be your guy buried at Arlington. I'm going to do some more digging. From the 1966 Select Military Register:
zsmith Posted March 9, 2017 Share #3 Posted March 9, 2017 Yeah that's got to be him. There's a listing on Ancestry in VA BIRLS death files that shows a Roy Archer that served from 1943 til 1962. His birth/death dates are the same as on the Arlington headstone. The guy from the Select Registers (Roy J Archer) with the serial number matching your tags retired in 1962 as a LTC. The Roy Joseph Archer in Arlington retired in 1962 as a LTC. It has to be the same guy. I also found these on Ancestry: Roy & friend: left to right - Roy Archer and friend Frank Tidwell. One boarded in the other's home, but not sure which one was the boarder. This photo belonged to Dorothy Babb Gardner and she related the information. Roy was Dorothy's cousin. If that's a Pontiac in the background, my father (Roy) bought it in California, and we (Mom, Dad and my two little sisters) traveled across the US in it.
