Sailor Studio Photo Flea Market Find

I spotted this sailor photo at a flea market that was otherwise devoid of militaria. Since I had recently added one of those flat caps to my humble collection, this photo was a must have. The gal only wanted 2 bucks for it so I was quite happy. When I got home I took the photo out of the grungy old frame, but there was nothing on the back to identify the sailor. There was, however, a photo of Victor Mature under it. Victor Mature spent time on a Coast Guard ship out of Greenland during the war, so I got two veterans photos and a grungy old frame for 2 bucks! I can just imagine that this guy sent his photo home to Mom, and she didn't have another frame to put it in so decided to sacrifice poor old Victor. Since they just may have been together for 70+ years, I can't decide to put them back together for posterity, or finally liberate poor Victor. I have no way of knowing, but hope the "42" below what I assume is the studio name Loring is the year this was taken.

Enjoy.

Very nice!

Yep - I cannot pass up those "orphan" vet photos either. They usually seem to be pretty inexpensive which makes it that much harder to resist.

Personally, I think I would put them back together the way they've been since Mom got the picture.

I've probably got about 2 dozen and would like to put them all up on a wall in the house someday, but need to get concurrence from the wife.

I also pickup old frames, as sometimes you find a veteran's photo without a frame.

Cool photo! Just a bit of info about your Victor Mature photo. You know how when you buy a photo frame nowadays, they have a photo of some unknown person(s) that usually tells how big the frame is? Well, back in the 30s and 40s, frames came with cheap prints of movie star publicity photos in them. Most likely, this vet's mom just got a frame and inserted sailor's photo without removing the "add" picture of Victor. Personally, I'd separate them, and if you like Victor Mature, enjoy both! If you don't like Victor Mature, then maybe you'll find someone else who does, as these prints are a fun thing for a fan!

Personally, we've seen a variety, and my sister has a small frame that came with Jimmy Stewart, and a 4x6 frame that has Joan Caulfield in it (same type of print as yours, too) and I actually have a men's shaving mirror (It originally was sold in a leather zip cse shaving set) that has Deanna Durbin on the back (front side - mirror; back side - place to put loved ones photo).

So, hope this helps and gives you a fun bit of history about these old movie star's photos in frames. They are always a similar style like this in the 1940s. In the 30s, they tend to be more black & white photos.

Wow, cool. I did not know that they sold frames with movie star's photos like that. I have a bit of an imagination, so the Mom thing was just what came to mind. I think I'll let Victor have some up front time in the frame and display the sailor with my flat cap. It's always great fun to find a little extra something once in a while. Thanks for looking and for the comments!
