robinb Posted March 5, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2017 OK. This is one of the oddest things I've found so far this year. A cork plug for the end of a Navy 5" shell. I didn't even know they made such an item. And who would save one as a souvenir?
doyler Posted March 5, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 5, 2017 Learn something every day Robin I guess it can always be used as a coaster for that cold beer in the military room for the man who has everything.

robinb Posted March 6, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted March 6, 2017 NEAT! Especially personalized. I don't what you mean by personalized? Those are factory markings. Nothing has been changed or added to it.

pzjgr Posted March 6, 2017 Share #8 Posted March 6, 2017 Sure, the 5" 38's and later 54's were separate loading with a cartridge case (not bagged like 16"'s).... So the projectile got rammed first, then the case with the powder charge. The plugs 1. kept the case and the projectile with a little stand off distance so they chambered properly, and 2. kept the powder charges fro falling out of the case. They are actually pretty hard to find...the later plugs for the both guns were made of plastic. If you really want to display a 5" 38 case properly, it should have one of these plugs....
