patches Posted March 6, 2017 Share #9 Posted March 6, 2017 Home Of Heroes does not list him as recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross http://homeofheroes.com/valor/02_awards/index_dsc/index-DSCd.html Does give that disclaimer in the Green box there. This listing is as complete as we are able to provide from numerous resources, however it is possible that a few recipients may not be listed. You can verify if someone received the Distinguished Service Cross from this list, but absence of a name should NOT be construed to definitively negate a veteran's claim to this award. We DO believe that the list of recipients contained herein is 99.9% COMPLETE for ALL Wars and periods. So is it possible he slipped by? In the photo in fact we see a device on the DSC, so.......will have to see.
Justin B. Posted March 6, 2017 Share #10 Posted March 6, 2017 His VA headstone lists DSC: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72797337 Doesn't that have to come from his Army records?
patches Posted March 6, 2017 Share #11 Posted March 6, 2017 His VA headstone lists DSC: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72797337 Doesn't that have to come from his Army records? One more thing, states he was 17 and was drafted, maybe the implication is he volunteered for the draft, believe though for the Army at least, one had to wait to be 18, the legal draft age to do that, as we know voluntary enlistment where halted, I think in late 1942, when the draft age was lowered to 18. Justin B. Posted March 6, 2017 Share #12 Posted March 6, 2017 From the interview here: https://memory.loc.gov/diglib/vhp/story/loc.natlib.afc2001001.13230/ ... it sounds like he had lied about his age. He says he joined up with the 506th PIR after Bastogne, and was in Austria when his dad made enough noise about the underage enlistment that he was discharged. As soon as he got on American soil he went into the recruiting office and joined up again, this time going to the 3rd ID and then the Constabulary.
