Screamingeagles101 Posted March 1, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2017 Hello, me and my friends will be embarking on a camping trip this summer. We will live off the land and bathe in the nearest body of water. Anyway, all my friends are talking about what knives they are going to bring. I am considered " the military expert" among friends. Therefore, I need the best blade. However, my department is helmets, not knives.... I need some suggestions of some modern military blades (US issued) that would impress friends and possibly stop a bear. Also, nothing too expensive. I don't want to use any of my ww2 blades(don't want to damage them) I will however be using my WW2 medic helmet as a wash basin, and my personal toilet. Thank you. No Quarter Posted March 1, 2017 Share #3 Posted March 1, 2017 Buy a new Ka-bar from Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop. The USMC Ka-Bar is the best knife ever made in my opinion. Jacob

No Quarter Posted March 1, 2017 Share #6 Posted March 1, 2017 Get the SOG Tomahawk which is also sold at Cabelas and Bass Pro. My roomate has one and has been using it for years and loves it. I think the price is pretty low too. Jacob

But do some research before you make a purchase to be sure it won't fail you out in the sticks. Jacob

No Quarter Posted March 1, 2017 Share #11 Posted March 1, 2017 I would consider getting an ENO hammock if you have the money. I use one when I go camping and it's great! It is very light! It stuffs up into a small bag and you can take it out and strap it to any two trees. If you do get one, the straps are sold separately. Just a suggestion though. https://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com/SFNT.html https://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com/product/AST001.html
268th C.A. Posted March 1, 2017 Share #12 Posted March 1, 2017 If you are camping, not on a survival trip. Get a simple US military pocket knife, Knife blade, screw driver, can opener. Think like a Boy Scout. It would be more practical. P/S if you see a bear...hope he is big and fat and unable to climb the tree you'll be in. Patchcollector Posted March 2, 2017 Share #14 Posted March 2, 2017 As the others have stated,Kabar and SOG are decent choices.I like Cold Steel too.And there's always the old reliable Swiss Army knife. As for Bears, cutting one with a knife will just likely p!ss him off.I would suggest this: http://www.securityandselfdefensestore.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=107&page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=1252&category_id=41&gclid=COOQ9d7mttICFUc6gQodjS8Cbg If you keep all of your "smellables"(food,soap,etc..) in a "bear bag" hoisted up in a tree each night you will be much less likely to encounter Bears, and other hungry critters. doyler Posted March 7, 2017 Share #15 Posted March 7, 2017 When it comes to a knife you dont have to go all Rambo or Crocadile Dundee.... There are afforable customs out there that will last for a life time. Something simple and functionable as well a multi purpose. A Bush Craft knife that can do multible jobs or small bowie suited for cutting, chopping etc. Have a guy in Arkansas that makes no nonsense everyday handmade knives and hatchets...plain,simple yet a working knife and leathal. He does a variety of designs. Ive ordered a 10 inch Bowie and more than likely with order one of his fighters and a Bush knife. He also offers a version of the kukri

1SG_1st_Cav Posted March 7, 2017 Share #18 Posted March 7, 2017 The guy above offered you some very good suggestions regarding bears. If you are not going to carry firearms please use his suggestions. I would never go into an area where bears are without a heavy duty firearm. But that would be my personal choice. Bringing a knife to a "BEAR FIGHT" would not be my choice. Good luck on your trip.

sactroop Posted March 7, 2017 Share #20 Posted March 7, 2017 Personally I really tend to line up with what doyler already posted. Since you mentioned your medic's helmet and the expectation among your friends about the military connection I thought I'd post this link only for your consideration. https://www.colonialknifecorp.com/products/wwii-mark-1-navy-survival-knife The Colonial is a reasonable reproduction of the knife they supplied during WW2. While it is a version of the Navy's MK1, it's also unique in the handle they used for their version. Too my knowledge it's the only one made with a "plastic handle", while many references to the Colonial MK1 call it a hard rubber handle it is in fact a nitrocellulose plastic with the trade name of "Tenite" from the Eastman Chemical Co. The same material used to make the Beckwith plastic sheaths. The President of Colonial is said to have promoted his design due to it's ability to be fully submerged in boiling water to clean and sterilize it. Legend has it that this feature made the knife more desirable to field medics. I'm not promoting or debating any part of these stories beyond just saying that they exist. I've had one of these Colonial's since I picked one up at a Flea market a few years ago, and have found it a useful little knife for field use. I figure at the least it could provide for some talk around the camp fire.

Sgt. BARney Posted March 8, 2017 Share #22 Posted March 8, 2017 As far as a knife, I would vote for the Kabar, but be sure to sharpen it (or get it sharpened) real well before you go, and bring a small stone to keep it sharp. Going to use your helmet for wash basin AND toilet??? That's hard corps! Why not just dig cat-holes? And as far as bears are concerned, all you gotta do is be able to run faster than the other guys . bheskett Posted March 8, 2017 Share #23 Posted March 8, 2017 If you are going to travel light then a good pocket knife is all you will need. For that matter not every person in the crew needs to carry one, you can share. I would not bring anything bulky and heavy. If you plan on making shelter a good hammock or tarp will do just fine. Have fun and let us know how it went. Bob
