I figured they were not related, but I found this man's name on the 1974-75 Ranger roster for A Company. These were the guys stationed on the home front during the War. Unless he went TDY early in his Army career or had a tour in Vietnam earlier, no, a Vietnam Service Medal would not be earned for support from the US.
