mikedon Posted February 25, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 25, 2017 Many years ago I was reading an article about the M1905 bayonets and the author mentioned that some people put together collections of Springfield Armory M1905 bayonets with an example from each year of production, 1906-1922. I thought that was a good idea since I had a few already and loved the M1 Garand and M1903 Springfield. I finally got a complete group together. The 1922 dated bayonet was the hardest to find. SKIPH Posted February 25, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 25, 2017 Nice collection of M1905s. Collecting all the years sounds like a good future endeavor. Do you also have the RIA versions for those early years too? SKIP

Misfit 45 Posted February 25, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 25, 2017 That is just beautiful! I also heard of people collecting every date and decided not to engage in the endeavor out of fear for my sanity. I am so glad you were able to stay strong and complete the mission. This is the first time I have ever seen the full set of dates. I have only seen one 1922 for sale in my life. I think I'll steal your picture for my files. Thanks for taking the time to show us your collection. Marv
Ronny67 Posted February 25, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 25, 2017 Really nice. I was never a big blade guy until I bought my first 1909 SA Bayo. I like your collection!

Hi mikedon, fabulous collection, always loved these longer 1905 bayonets, and the variations of leather, canvas and plastic M-3 scabbards. I have a few myself but not solely SA models. well done a dedicated collection lewis. .

reschenk Posted February 25, 2017 Share #9 Posted February 25, 2017 Coin collectors have always tried to assemble a collection of every date and mintmark of their favorite series. I have often wondered why collectors of dated swords and bayonets didn't do the same. I guess you've shown me at least some do. I imagine cost is a major factor in not more folks doing so. How many 1922s did Springfield produce? I'm actually a bit surprised they produced any. I would have thought with WWI long over they would have had enough in their inventory to meet any possible need for the small peace time force. As you can tell, I am not really a bayonet person - I mainly collect swords. Is there a good reference work on these 1905s which gives info on the numbers produced by year and other such useful info? sactroop Posted February 25, 2017 Share #10 Posted February 25, 2017 I highly recommend Gary Cunningham's, (bayonetman) CD or his latest book. I find I use the CD the most often and the PDF files are easy to take with you.

On page 22 of Gary Cunningham's new book "U.S. Knife Bayonets & Scabbards, A Collector's Guide" he shows 15,110 1922 bayonets produced. It is a very good book on the subject. I have my copy.
