I came across this article that had run in the Rocky Mountain News on 18 Dec. 1943 about a Staff Sgt. Howard Schletz who had been a gunner on a B-25 of the 310th Bomb Group of the 12th Air Force's 57th Bomb Wing and had survived a ditching at sea and then escaped from an Italian Prisoner of War camp. He's reunited with his mother and wearing his Purple Heart and Air Medal awards in the photo. Interestingly enough I found that both of his numbered but unnamed medals had been sold on Etsy several years ago ID'd to him with his award letter so I thought I'd post this article in case someone on the forum has the medals.
