67Rally Posted February 19, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 19, 2017 I inherited what was left of my stepmother's deceased stepfather's military sword and knife collection several years ago and posted about the items I received as well as the ones that I didn't get to keep (but easily could have had I expressed interest - including the M1860 cavalry saber he had). When his widow was moved into assisted living, his items that were more personal and not sold in the estate sale needed a new place to go and, by default, I ended up with two boxes. I opened one box and noted the nature of the pieces (a quick glance) and closed them up and left them in the garage. Fast forward nearly four years, the boxes caught my attention and I opened them to find a few small treasures. This Civil War token was a curiosity and a cursory search helped me to understand the history behind them and that they were outlawed by Congress in 1964. 67Rally Posted February 19, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted February 19, 2017 This buckle has has me questioning...I have NO experience in authenticating civil war pieces so I have feelers out on it. My approach is that I have to assume it to be reproduction until it can be proven otherwise. Having viewed this man's collection on a fairly regular basis when he was alive and knowing of the manner in which he was respected in the ACW collector word in the 70s and 80s when he was active, I do wonder about this particular item. 67Rally Posted February 19, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted February 19, 2017 This item is more of a curiosity. I know that they are 19th century eye-glasses (with a hard leather slip case)...but I thought they were pretty cool to see among the collection. VMI88 Posted February 21, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 21, 2017 The CS oval buckle is a replica - there was never a genuine buckle that looked like that.
