USAF29thINFvet Posted February 17, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2017 Looking to put together a LRRP display and wanted to know which type of ruck would be appropriate / best choice. Thanks
The_Brick Posted February 17, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 17, 2017 If you are doing a LRRP display, a LW rucksack or a CIDG ruck(a US Forrest Service or Rothco Small ALICE ruck are great stand ins) will be your preferred ruck as they the are most commonly used rucks by LRRPs and LRPs. Tropicals are great for Ranger displays as they came in late 1968 and by Feb 1969 all LRRP/LRP units were converted into a Ranger company. As for ARVN rucks, I'd personally stay away from them altogether as there isn't a whole lot of proof of their use. Though its always best to pick a unit and time frame and trying to look at photographs to see what ruck/gear the LRRP unit used as each unit was different.-Dave
USAF29thINFvet Posted February 17, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted February 17, 2017 Thanks Dave....I have Kevin Lyle's book and it has a picture showing a LRRP with an ARVN rucksack hence my inquiry. Don't know how accurate this book is but it is the only one I have other than "Grunt".
Spike Posted February 18, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 18, 2017 Lyles book is not a good reference for this. You NEED to get LRRP by Jay Borman. The BEST photo reference for what you want to do.
The_Brick Posted February 18, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 18, 2017 Lyles' book is a good starting point, but its not the best book for this type of project. The best book on the subject is the one Spike mentions "LRRP photos: Volume 1" by Jay Borman although the price is very daunting at $190 shipped in the US. There are also quite a number of images of LRRPs, LRPs, and Rangers online such as this 1st cav website LRP/Ranger website http://www.lrrprangers.com/f-PicIndex.htm. Or this facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/231033606956237/ .Hope this helps-Dave
