Jennings Lane Posted February 6, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 6, 2017 I would assume that this is a Spanish American War era photograph. Cabinet card. Infantry officer wearing marksmanship badges. Curious as to the medal in the center of the two badges. Any other info as to unit, why two marksmanship badges etc much appreciated. Thanks Andy
KurtA Posted February 6, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 6, 2017 Based on the collar insignia, he's Iowa National Guard. Take a 10X glass and see if there is a number above the crossed rifles.
BEAST Posted February 6, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 6, 2017 That is a very nice image, but it is post Span-Am. The officer is wearing the 1902 undress cap.
Jennings Lane Posted February 6, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted February 6, 2017 Based on the collar insignia, he's Iowa National Guard. Take a 10X glass and see if there is a number above the crossed rifles. I'm pretty sure it's a 56. A chance that it's a 58. Thanks
gomorgan Posted February 6, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 6, 2017 He's wearing the second pattern Iowa NG long service medal, if you can read the bar on top will have number of years in blue. These are very difficult medals to locate, and ribbons are usually in tatters. These are pre 1911 issue metals and the ribbon is L to R Blue White Red. Best I can do for you...George

gomorgan Posted February 7, 2017 Share #7 Posted February 7, 2017 You're most welcome, does the Sharpshooter medal have IOWA on the arms by chance? Another tough Iowa NG item to locate.
Jennings Lane Posted February 7, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted February 7, 2017 I can't tell. Even under magnification, it's washed out. Unfortunately, I don't have his badges, just the picture. And I listed it on ebay. I'm thinning out some paper, pictures etc. Too much stuff, Thanks again for your help.
