kaotikross Posted February 3, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 3, 2017 Ever hear of anything like this? The owner thinks it was intentional. Most think it was chipped and re-ground. Was there ever a military purpose for a modification such as this? Thanks in advance for any replies. I give up, cant seem to get the pic. but anyway, it has a large area ground down near the guard, in a semi-circle almost. Looks like a chip somebody fixed but the owner thinks it had another purpose. or please, tell me how to upload the pic, as I cant seem to figure it out. the knife is a gerber command II

SKIPH Posted February 3, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 3, 2017 My guess would be, ( and it is a guess), that it is purposely placed there. You stick someone to the hilt, twist it, or turn it,then pull sideways, your gonna open them up like a can opener. Never seen this, but just a guess. Think about a hawkbill knife, nasty wounds. John762 Posted February 4, 2017 Share #8 Posted February 4, 2017 I'm not nearly experienced enough to make an educated guess as to whether it was by design or by damage. My first thought is that it would considerable weaken the blade at the most vulnerable stress point and I can't think that .gov would do that. But it's just a guess.... SKIPH Posted February 4, 2017 Share #9 Posted February 4, 2017 I don't recall Gerber MK2s being US Government purchase, except maybe one unit. I can't verify that at this time. Everyone I know who had Gerber MK2s, bought them private purchase, including me. A lot of guys bought and carried them. SKIP

SKIP Skip I'm sure you're correct I just made an assumption based on the discussion. Thankfully I'm not chasing that type of knife so my knowledge level is pretty basic for that style. SKIPH Posted February 4, 2017 Share #12 Posted February 4, 2017 John- I spent 20 years in Special Forces, and airborne units. I never saw one issued. At least in the units I served in. Everybody bought their own. SKIP
e19 Posted February 4, 2017 Share #13 Posted February 4, 2017 Roger that Skip, never heard of anyone being issued one either. AFAIK, they like Bucks were private purchase commercial knives. I have one of the angled blade models.
