USA.mil.history Posted February 2, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2017 It's a Martin PBM Mariner, first used by the Navy (and later the Coast Guard) in 1940. It was a competitor of the Consolidated PBY Catalina. Anti submarine patrol and search and rescue. About 1,360 were built, mostly at the Glenn L. Martin plant, Middle River, Maryland, just north of Baltimore. They were used as first line aircraft through the Korean War up until 1956.
northcoastaero Posted February 2, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 2, 2017 The Martin PBM Mariner squadron could be Patrol Bombing Squadron 21 VPB-21. Looks like the date on the photo is September 10, 1945. fold3.com may have a war diary for VPB-21. Found the following information on vpnavy.org . Hope this helps. http://vpnavy.org/vp21_1940.html http://www.vpnavy.com/vp21news.html
