FT.Monmouth1943 Posted February 1, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 1, 2017 I recently picked up this post WWI Colonels uniform and due to the ribbons, I thought it would be easy to research but I can't find anything. COL SMITH is stamped on the right sleeve and the tag has what appears to say "COL. W W Smith"(?) on it and dated 1923. The ribbons are a Purple Heart, which would lead me to believe this officer served until the early 1930's, Spanish American War campaign, Philippines campaign, WWI campaign with 6 battle stars, French Legion of Honour, and possibly a Portuguese Order of Aviz. Also has 2 overseas chevrons. Even if it can't be ID'd, it's certainly a nice piece that I'm glad to have, but it'd be great to figure out who this colonel was. Thanks in advance for any help and all comments are welcome.

everforward Posted February 1, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 1, 2017 I'd say 1933....thinking his pen got hung up on the tag when writing. The Army didn't have a uniform like this in 1923, but they did in '33......it would have still looked like a WW1 uniform in 1923.

Captainofthe7th Posted February 1, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 1, 2017 There are two W W Smiths I could find in the early army registers: William W. Smith and Winfield W. Smith. I can't find much more info on either of them, they show up in retired lists by the 50s and I did not search much further, but that may be a good start for you. Baron3-6 Posted February 5, 2017 Share #7 Posted February 5, 2017 Winfield W. Smith shows up as commander 192nd Inf Bde, Organized reserves, as Captain commanding HHC Bde in 1922....I'd think he'd be an old Captain having served in the Span-Am War at that point. Justin B. Posted February 6, 2017 Share #8 Posted February 6, 2017 I don't think it's W. W. People don't usually write the same letter two different ways right in a row. My guess is "W. D." There was a LTC Walter D. Smith of field artillery in 1923, had been a temporary colonel in the war. Justin B.
