268th C.A. Posted January 28, 2017 Share #2 Posted January 28, 2017 I always look at these with a jewelers loupe, it will pick up much detail. buttons, belt buckles etc. He is armed to the teeth. looks like a M1842 Springfield .69 Cal musket, Bayonet, a Colt pocket pistol and one very nice knife. That is a very nice ambrotype. My first guess would be Union. I would love to see the cap badge and buckles with a loupe. Stunning!
wcdino685 Posted January 28, 2017 Share #3 Posted January 28, 2017 I agree if you can make out that Cap badge it will open up a lot of info for you.
Jennings Lane Posted January 29, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted January 29, 2017 It looks like the badges and buttons have been enhanced with a bit of gold paint. I'm posting a close up. Thanks for everyone's help. Andy
MAW Posted January 29, 2017 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2017 My guess is earl war federal... Looks like he has a stripe down the side of his trousers, which is atypical...

scottiques Posted January 30, 2017 Share #7 Posted January 30, 2017 Agree nice triple armed yank soldier. If you take a look at the BACK of the image, you may be able to discern the hat insignia. Be careful with it and hold it up to the light-- often you can still see what is hidden under the gold tint. Years ago I had a heavily tinted image that looked like a blob belt plate. The back showed a fantastic VA state seal belt plate! Scott
