Not sure what the one patch is, but he thought it was a navy insignia for an LST? Just getting into patches and dog tags, never thought I would but it's addicting. The patch you mentioned in your post is the Navy Amphibious Landing Forces insignia (white alligator on black base material). You'll find a collection of these here: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/84914-amphibious-forces-alligator-cuff-patches/ Within the lot a rather seldom variant of the 17th Airborne Division patch. Usually the second claw from the right is pointing to right as well. These "reversed claw" variants are hard to find. Great start for a new collection!
