JBFloyd Posted March 24, 2017 Share #7 Posted March 24, 2017 Riley had more ID cards than anyone I've ever seen. I have his Aug 1944 War Department ID card as a colonel, Air Corps (born 11 Dec 1910); and his Federal Civil Defense Administration ID card issued in April 1956. I also have his medal group (Legion of Merit with olc, campaign medals, two Department of the Air Force civilian awards abd a French Croix de Guerre). The French citation (Jan 1945) shows him as a colonel in the US Strategic Air Forces in Europe, with a service number O-305668. His records fall into the morass of burned records, but it appears that he was not a flyer, but involved in support functions. As a civilian, his passport shows that he travelled for the Air Force through North Africa, the Middle East and Europe in the 1950's His medals have been sitting in my "to-do" pile since last fall, but I just haven'r gotten to working on them

JBFloyd Posted March 30, 2017 Share #12 Posted March 30, 2017 Colonel Riley's medal group contains: Legion of Merit, with one oak leaf cluster; Bronze Star; Army Commendation Medal; American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal, with 2 bronze stars; WWII Victory Medal; Army of Occupation Medal, clasp "Germany"; Armed Forces Reserve Medal, with hourglass device; Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Medal, named "Jack Riley"; Air Force Meritorious Civilian Service Medal; France Croix de Guerre 1939-1945, with palm. The group is in a glazed frame which makes it dillicult to image clearly.
