TLeo Posted January 12, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 12, 2017 I don't believe the previous member who owned this nice group ever posted it so I thought folks might like to see it (especially the original photos and map) This officer began his career in the reserves and in 1940 went on active duty. Shortly after Pearl Harbor he deployed to Samoa with 8th Marines. In November 1942 he went with 3/8 to Guadalcanal and participated in the fighting in defense of the island until Feb. 1943. When the 2nd Division deployed to New Zealand to recover, he received a commission and given charge of a rifle platoon in 3/8. Their next campaign took him to Tarawa where he and his men were dropped at the reef and forced to wade into Red Beach 2. All his men either drowned in deep water they were left off in or killed/wounded trying to get ashore. He alone was able to get ashore unscathed. After Tarawa he was assigned to 1/8 and took part in the invasion of Saipan where he was wounded but returned to his outfit and then participated in the invasion of Tinian. Afterwards, he and several other officers returned to the states to be instructors in the training regiment at Camp Pendleton where he remained for the remainder of the war.
