These are the older style Army Scuba Badge and also known as the Special Forces Combat Diver Badge until the design change which took place in 2004. On 17 September 2004, the scuba diver badge was discontinued in lieu of a new special operations diver badge and an additional grade, the special operations diving supervisor badge, was created. (See next post below) Prior to this change, the basic scuba diver badge was the same for all of the U.S. armed forces. The new design includes sharks, symbolizing speed, stealth, and lethal efficiency, and two Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knives in saltire, representing the heritage of OSS operational swimmers during World War II. The combat diver qualification and combat diving supervisors courses are taught by Company C, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School, Naval Air Station Key West, Florida.

The silver metal colored scuba badge was issued in standard size and a mess dress size was also available for formal wear. The coin was issued in Okinawa to those who successfully completed the Combat Diver Course (circa 1988)

Here are the current (as of 2004) Special Forces (Special Operations) Combat Diver Badges in both full size and dress miniature. The badge on the left is a prototype design that was suggested but not approved. The approved design is the Special Operations Combat Diver (center badge) and the Combat Diver Supervisor (Dive Supe) Badge that has the star and wreath. There was some discussion about a Dive Medic Badge since that is another qualification that the Special Forces 18D medics can attain. I am not sure where that currently stands. The Current Special Operations Combat Diver and Dive Supe badges are also found in flat black subdued versions.
