Vietnam aerosol bug spray?

I thought about buying it, but worried about the toxic contents leaking! GI bug juice that's 48 years old can't be healthy to be around.

Lol...I havent checked mine but dont recall any damage or leaking.Never tried to spray it but often like old paint or other aeorsol cans the pressure charge will bleed off.

Have several bottles of the plastic bugs juice too and it must evaporate a tad over time as these are in the original cardboard box.

Im sure there are a lot of things under the kitchen sink that are just as bad and if the wrong two come in contact its not a good day. :D

Wow! No joke back when I was in High School (1980-81ish) I worked at a local bowling alley here in DE. They asked me to clean out the attic/storage area and I found two cases of this exact stuff!!! No one knew why or how it got there. The manager had me throw it out of course but not before I kept one can for myself..wish I had taken more now!

Makes you wonder if this stuff was sold as surplus. I did some research, pyrethrin is an organic insecticide, so maybe it's not that bad. I went back and bought it and the belt and canteen rig before I left town.

  • 3 months later...

Have one that I picked up for my RVN collection. The QM guys attached to our unit over there used 1 can per conex, they said it would kill everything in the conex as they were shipping stuff to Okinawa or back to the " World" ( what the US was called).

And I imagine there were some critters in those CONEX containers you didn't want to export to the US! I have this can on a shelf with the more common small bottle of bug juice, that's the extent of my Vietnam bug spray collection.

Doing a display about military items used to fight disease is one of those exhibits I've thought about for a long time. As most know, disease has killed more military personnel than combat has. If I live long enough, I will. It would include things like Matt has posted, mosquito netting, pro-kits, even the OCP's I was issued for Afghanistan had bug repellent in them.

Yea, 4"-5" roaches, 6"-8" rice beetles to mention the largest. Then there was the S.E.Asia Iguana, its maiting call sounded like f#"*% you. An AF guy had one as a pet, brought it home in a box on the flight out. Just wish I had spent the mone sent home on Tiger Stripes and in country made SSI and beer can crest.

Once found cases and cases of this same stuff! And yes it must have been sold as surplus. Found it all in a old shack the railroad was using to store mics. stuff. Walked the railroad tracks from Ft. Leavenworth down to the Lansing area one long summer day. Kept afew (borrowed) but have no idea where they are now. That was 30+ years ago!
