John762 Posted January 6, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 6, 2017 Auction # 262785262247 Wilde Tool 1943 16", Closed at $1041.00! I know its nice but it doesn't look THAT nice!
bayonetman Posted January 6, 2017 Share #2 Posted January 6, 2017 Probably an example of two bidders who decided "I'll just throw in a ridiculously high bid just to be absolutely sure I get it!" Note that the last two bids are at the last second. To me even the earlier bids in the $600 range were on the high side, but if someone really wants a WT 43 to fill out a collection, maybe the $650 bid would not be too ridiculous. It would be interesting to know if the high bidder will actually honor their bid and pay the price. I have known of many instances where a bidder like this backed out, but since he has 2017 feedbacks at 100% I imagine he will pay up. Many years ago on eBay (I think in the late 1990s) there was a newer collector who had very deep pockets and bought almost every rare and top condition US bayonet and some knives as I recall. It was basically impossible to outbid him if he really wanted it. Then something happened and he was forced to sell most of the items and in doing so he lost a great deal of money. "A fool and his money ........."
John762 Posted January 7, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted January 7, 2017 I agree with you 100%.
I was watching this auction from the day it was listed with the intent of throwing in my bid in the last 2-3 seconds, about 3 days into the listing it broke $600.00 and Boom I'm out! LoL
Just out of curiosity I pulled the auction up and hit it about 5 minutes prior to close and I figured I'd just watch the action, with 3 seconds to go it hadn't moved so I figured that's it. Then the screen flickered and it read $1041.00, and all of a sudden someone owes me a new computer screen cause I sprayed good bourbon all over mine... ;-)
hyrax222 Posted January 8, 2017 Share #4 Posted January 8, 2017 Now that's funny! I am glad I acquired most of my long US bayonets long ago. Otherwise I could not hope to assemble a reasonable collection...
John762 Posted January 8, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted January 8, 2017 Now that's funny! I am glad I acquired most of my long US bayonets long ago. Otherwise I could not hope to assemble a reasonable collection... It isn't easy to try to assemble a quality collection today especially if you're just an average working stiff. (Like me) Sales like that one are an anomaly (I hope) and doesn't show the true current path of collecting. There are some things that I've seen and would absolutely love to add to my meager collection but unfortunately it's just not economically feasible. I'll try to buy a lesser quality example just to fill a spot and hope that maybe someday I'll be able to upgrade. I hope...
porterkids Posted January 9, 2017 Share #6 Posted January 9, 2017 It will be difficult to find a nice WT under $1000 now. Everyone who is selling one will price theirs by what they've seen on ebay.
John762 Posted January 9, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted January 9, 2017 Well a 10" modified just sold for $510.99.... Wow, I have to wonder if this isn't a couple of guys with deep pockets who just refuse to lose? I have a 43 dated WT that is most definitely not pristine and I have a trade working with a friend for a 42 that's in similar condition. If this is the way things are going I can easily foresee these being the only pair I ever get.
SKIPH Posted January 9, 2017 Share #8 Posted January 9, 2017 WOW! I got a WT cut down a few years back, paid $35 for it. Seller had a bucket full of M1905E1s, reached in to check them out, pulled a Wilde Tool first grab. Didn't put it down. Only one he had. Lucky day! Have a friend who was given a mint, WT M1905 16" about ten years ago. Those days are long gone now. SKIP

Also, "43 dated OL M1 went for $505.oo IMO much rarer than the WT "05E1 Be good to hear Garý's input.

SKIPH Posted January 14, 2017 Share #13 Posted January 14, 2017 I'm not quite understanding this WT M1905E1 bidding war. There are 2 on ebay at this time, with very high bids. Ebay item #112262022201 has 49 bids, up to $519 w/ 9 hrs to go this could hit as high as what 16" blades are going. The other #172483483405, is up to $455. It has 4 days, & 10hrs left. These are cut downs, going for insane prices. Gonna make it tough on collectors who don't have deep pockets. I understand the economics of supply and demand-but!!! SKIPH Posted January 14, 2017 Share #14 Posted January 14, 2017 Just noticed the same folks are bidding on both of the WTs. Interesting, but I guess it would be fairly normal. Someone wants a WT really bad. SKIP
suwanneetrader Posted January 14, 2017 Share #15 Posted January 14, 2017 If the WT's are bringing $550. and up what is a common Hoe cut down? Richard
bobcat87 Posted January 14, 2017 Share #16 Posted January 14, 2017 Many of the rarities are buried in collections that will not resurface again for a long time. I also believe there are a lot more collectors now than there were even 10 years ago. That means there are fewer and fewer nice specimens for purchase. I remember buying almost mint m4 bayonets for less than $60. Aerials for less than $100. Now try to purchased even a common mint specimen for less than $250. Let's face it, Ebay has been setting and driving prices for many years. Five years from now, I bet that same WT bayonet will sell at a profit. We are collecting the right items guys. Keep them now and reap the rewards of the future!
reschenk Posted January 14, 2017 Share #17 Posted January 14, 2017 Of course for the really good price I'd have to go back to my youth in the early '50s when our local Army surplus store had a big bin of these at 75 cents each. If only we would have known...
SKIPH Posted January 14, 2017 Share #18 Posted January 14, 2017 Yup! Remember in the late 60s buying a mint Utica M4 for $4.95 (still have it), M1 bayonets for $3.50. M1905s for the same price. One thing I could never find were M3s. They just weren't around. SKIP

SKIPH Posted January 14, 2017 Share #20 Posted January 14, 2017 John-We didn't have the advantage of collector's guides or books in those days, so we didn't really know what was what. Probably missed out on a lot of fantastic deals on MK2s, machetes, bayonets , etc., maybe even V42s. I'll never know! Hindsight!!!! SKIP
bobcat87 Posted January 14, 2017 Share #21 Posted January 14, 2017 This is such a wonderful hobby that brings back many memories for everyone. Yet, the best part of all is being the caretaker to preserve them for future generations. They need to be educated on their importance and the many hardships each item represents before we were graced with their possession. I see it as a true honor. To all service members on this board past, present, and future, A very heartfelt thank you! We will not allow our history to be forgotten. This is the true reason why many of us collect. John762 Posted January 15, 2017 Author Share #23 Posted January 15, 2017 I just found out that the seller of the 10" Wilde that closed for $510.00 is a friend. He indicated that he had that blade on his gun show tables for a long time @ $250.00 and it didn't sell so on a whim he put it on eBay. Had I only known he had it. Sigh...
