Vietnam POW/MIA Medal

Thought you might enjoy seeing a very scarce medal I picked up a couple years ago on Ebay. I had heard of this medal, but had never seen an original one. While surfing Ebay one night, found this for next to nothing, so bid on it and won the bid with no one else bidding! To say it pleased me is putting it mildly. thumbsup.gif

 

Vietnam POW/MIA Medal

 

General Information:

 

In 1983 Senator Robert Byrd proposed the creation of special

commemorative medal to honor those still listed as MIA in the Vietnam

War. Approved by Congress, the first award was presented in July

of 1984 to Col. Earl P. Hopper whose son was listed as MIA after his

F-4 was shot down in January of 1968.

 

Following this presentation ceremonies were made across the nation

honoring “...those American personnel still missing and perhaps held

captive in Southeast Asia.”. In all 2,483 medals were to be presented

to the next of kin of each of the MIA’s. The Federal Government still

retains the medals for the families they were unable to contact.
