el_jefe52 Posted October 5, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 5, 2008 Thought you might enjoy seeing a very scarce medal I picked up a couple years ago on Ebay. I had heard of this medal, but had never seen an original one. While surfing Ebay one night, found this for next to nothing, so bid on it and won the bid with no one else bidding! To say it pleased me is putting it mildly. Vietnam POW/MIA Medal General Information: In 1983 Senator Robert Byrd proposed the creation of special commemorative medal to honor those still listed as MIA in the Vietnam War. Approved by Congress, the first award was presented in July of 1984 to Col. Earl P. Hopper whose son was listed as MIA after his F-4 was shot down in January of 1968. Following this presentation ceremonies were made across the nation honoring “...those American personnel still missing and perhaps held captive in Southeast Asia.”. In all 2,483 medals were to be presented to the next of kin of each of the MIA’s. The Federal Government still retains the medals for the families they were unable to contact. Robin Link to comment
