I posted this sometime ago to no avail. Perhaps any new members that came aboard since then may have some insight as to the origin of this knife. It remains a mystery. Cast aluminium handle. The blade length is 7 1/2". Over all length not counting pommel skull crusher is 11 3/4".

TallyHo,

You have some superbly interesting items! I'm a complete novice with this type of blade but I'll offer my observations. The grip certainly is reminiscent of the original 1918 models, as I understand many of those were field modified to remove/reduce the guard and it appears that this model has had that done also. The pommel nut appears very much like the original model also. The blade reminds me more of a Fairbourn style than the 1918 but that might be my inexperience speaking. I find the markings most interesting, I wonder if its something done by a swabby for consideration or just for his friends? I can't quite make it out but is there another symbol under the USN stamp?

Excellent find!

Thanks, The handle casting is crude to begin with, but that being said, I scrutinized the markings under the USN using magnification as well as shadowing to glean what it may be. What I can only make out is zero three 0 3. I have no idea of its significance, however if I were to speculate I would say the knife is of the Vietnam era .
