Kyle80s Posted December 24, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 24, 2016 Help please in identifying this squadron, whatmdoes the star mean? The only info I have is a LT Col Huey, is written inside, this rank is a USMC,helmet looks 80s/90s
hink441 Posted December 24, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 24, 2016 Still think it is VMAT-102. Here is their patch. Notice the Star background.
Kyle80s Posted December 24, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted December 24, 2016 I,m not convinced myself, see no evidence
Looper5920 Posted December 25, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 25, 2016 It could also be VMFA(AW)-533.
Kyle80s Posted December 25, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted December 25, 2016 I have seen many helmets from this squadron and the hawk is always a perfect copy of the squadron emblem, now the bird on my helmet is not,and it actually appears to be an eagle,so no I am not convinced, but hey it's a good call. Salvage Sailor Posted December 25, 2016 Share #6 Posted December 25, 2016 Often when you see a red star it's an adversary squadron
Kyle80s Posted December 25, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted December 25, 2016 Do you think this is from an aggressor squadron even if the star is white with red edging ?
Salvage Sailor Posted December 25, 2016 Share #8 Posted December 25, 2016 Possibly, I initially thought it was the 4477th but the Red Eagle is different and you said it's USMC, not USAF (or USN) The star may merely be decor on the helmet and could also be in reverse colors, the real clue is the "Red Eagle" (or Hawk)
Kyle80s Posted December 25, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted December 25, 2016 I researched Lt col, this rank in the us can only be found in the USAF or USMC,the helmet is configured for naval use, because of the reflective tape, the headphone wiring where it exits the shell towards the back, the black velcro patch above the right eye and the amplifier on the nose of the oxygen mask that came with helmet,as did the USMC back in the 80s/90s,use the same spec helmet,I did think it belonged to h&ms 31 aggressors because of the bird, and the star for aggressor, have a look at these pics, but I am still skeptical. Look closely at the backseat driver's helmet....
hink441 Posted December 26, 2016 Share #10 Posted December 26, 2016 The previous thread on this helmet had forum member AzPhil say that he was in VMAT-102 in the 80s, and that this is the same helmet worn during that era. That is a first hand account and is pretty compelling to me. Aggressor squadrons typically use a Red Star, your helmet has a White Star which happens to match the squadron patch for VMAT-102. I think a helmet worn by Attack Instructors is a pretty cool helmet. You have a very nice helmet. Here is the previous thread. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/275108-bought-this-hgu-33-what-squadronaircraft/
Kyle80s Posted December 26, 2016 Author Share #11 Posted December 26, 2016 Yes this helmet is really cool, well I was the one who set up the thread on flight helmet section a while ago,and azphil had contacted me with no solid evidence with regards to vmat 102,he says in the last reunion a guy who worked on flight equipment at vmat 102,said he definitely does remember this helmet, but he does recall a Huey, but cannot recall what unit he was with. I chose to post here in the marines section after all it's just a squadron I.d I need,I think this section is my best shot at this time.
