Eric Queen Posted December 18, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 18, 2016 Having lived and gone to school in Japan for many years these types of photos are of special interest to me. My thanks to Brig for giving me a heads up on the jinrikusha portrait. Please post your pre WW1 studio photos from Japan or China.

Brig Posted December 18, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 18, 2016 Eric, love that second one with the kepi and cane! Almost looks like he lost some weight on his journey, uniform looks a tad baggy. Here's a turn of the century portrait of a Marine taken in Hong Kong. I also have one of him taken in DC, unfortunately neither has a name. Notice the early white cover without an emblem, instead it was simply pulled over it, an early practice
SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted December 19, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 19, 2016 Brig,If the emblem were underneath the cover, wouldn't there be some indication on the cover? Some shadow or shape where the emblem is underneath? It looks so smooth I would have guessed the emblem was removed..?

It could have been, but they were often worn under the white pullover, as well
