Not all that uncommon (and is a pretty familiar photo) but here is Henry Hulbert wearing the Quartermaster Sergeant seam to seam 1912 chevron:

Here's Drum Major Hiram H. Florea  (1927-1943) wearing the Drum Major dress chevron from after 1922 (when the dress chevrons went from the seam to seam style to the 3.5" size like the field chevrons):

Here are two more shots of Pryor and Branson wearing the 1912 dress Drum Major and Second Band Leader chevrons, respectively (taken from the 1922 uniform regulation illustrations):

So as I look through Klie's new EGA book (which is INCREDIBLE by the way - get it if you don't have it yet!), the Marine in post 8 is also in his book and is identified as Hayes Rainier.

I think the photo in post 36 may actually be prior to 1912 based on the trumpeter insignia... I believe in 1912 the design switched from a bugle (which has no valves) to an actual trumpet with valves.  Photo appears to be the earlier type

Has to be 1912 or later. Now the Marine may have been around earlier than that, and had the patch awhile, or it could be old stock, but he is sporting the P1912 cap while his seated buddy is wearing the P1904

Here is a great band photo from January, 1925.  It is interesting because the musician chevron first appears (in text) in the 1917 revision of the 1912 regs.  This means that for the period between 1917 and 1922 when the dress chevrons went to 3.5 inches wide, the musician dress chevron was the only one (with the exception of the lance corporal single chevron of the time) that was was smaller than the 8 inch wide 1912 style dress chevron.  The service stripes also got smaller when the chevrons did, but for some reason in this 1925 photo, the band members are still wearing the seam to seam service stripes that went with the 1912 style chevrons.

Here is a photo from November 1925, showing the Marine Corps mascot SgtMaj Jiggs wearing the short-lived "open center" style dress chevrons.. From '22 to '26 the Staff Sergeant, Quartermaster Sergeant and Sergeant Major chevrons were hollow (so to speak) with open centers.  I have been unable until now to find photos of these ranks being worn by Marines and would still like to find some photos of the ranks being worn by TWO-LEGGED Marines!

Another nice 1912 style GySgt chevron!  Seems like there are many more photos of Gunnys from back then than of First Sergeants
