EODsmity Posted January 4, 2017 Share #3 Posted January 4, 2017 From what you pictured, it looks like what we in EOD call "Clown Fins". Its a parachute used to retard, or slow a bomb as if falls to earth. If I remembered correctly it is called a "parachute retarding tail assembly". Some of these are under powerful spring tension. They "spring" open with great force to operate. By looks of it, I would say its fits an GP old style bomb. New MK80 series bombs have a recessed ring at the base plate where the fins (Conical, snake eye, slick, retarded) are attached with set screws in the ring. This appears to have a threaded part that screws into the fuse well with an adaptor ring. The only problem I cant get my mind around is the old style US bombs all had a 1 inch fuse well. That looks to be 3 inch which is what is used in modern GP bombs. I will have to do some more research! LOL! Smitty
