Jennings Lane Posted December 2, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 2, 2016 Civil War Ambrotype. Any information appreciated. Unit etc. I just purchased this ambrotype. WWIIDADS Posted December 2, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 2, 2016 Kinda looks like a Confederate enlisted shell of Richmond style, 1864.

WWIIDADS Posted December 2, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 2, 2016 Only unusual Confederate thing is use of buckle on center of chinstrap of McDowell type Kepi
MAW Posted December 2, 2016 Share #5 Posted December 2, 2016 Not a Confederate. He's a Union soldier. Where did this image come from? Looks like he is wearing a so-called "State Jacket". Several states, including Ohio and Illinois issued jackets like this to soldiers...mostly in the early part of the war. They typically have 8 or 9 button fronts and epaulets. Sometimes a scalloped cuff, sometimes buttons on the cuff, sometimes both.
ludwigh1980 Posted December 2, 2016 Share #6 Posted December 2, 2016 Could he be wearing a VRC shell jacket, Veteran Reserve Corp, Union Army? The cut and fabric weight reminds me of a VRC shell jacket, especially around the buttons. The trim on those jackets does not show up real well in period photography. Jennings Lane Posted December 3, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted December 3, 2016 I bought the image here, in Louisville, Ky. But, there wasn't any information as to the family history. Thanks for everyone's help. Andy
MAW Posted December 3, 2016 Share #8 Posted December 3, 2016 Very good. Likely an Ohio or Illinois soldier....probably early war ~1862ish. Not VRC.... Impossible to tell anything beyond that.
USCapturephotos Posted December 5, 2016 Share #9 Posted December 5, 2016 Yeah, I agree. It does look like one of the many state jackets. I'll ask the obvious...can you see any details at all on the buttons? Paul
