Misfit 45 Posted November 22, 2016 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2016 Hi Folks, Just got all the leather M4s out for a photo shoot. It starts of with an M3 Utica guard marked, then works to the right somewhat chronologically until the last one, a Camillus 1953 contract. The box on the left is a Utica M4 and the box on the right is an Imperial Hemphill M4. They are the ones that are not in the scabbards and still in cosmoline. jw517 Posted November 22, 2016 Share #2 Posted November 22, 2016 Nice work Marve! It's hard to beat that. Does your Camillus 1953 have those whittle marks on the handle?
Misfit 45 Posted November 22, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted November 22, 2016 Here is the list of M4s. From left to right. M3 Utica, Case, ACC, KI, Utica (NIB), Camillus, Imperial SP, PAL, Imperial (Hemphill)(NIB), AERIAL (staked pins), and Camillus 1953. The two wood handled M4s are Camillus which has a two piece grip, and a KI marked, one piece grip, which has a Utica Latch plate. Thanks for looking. Misfit 45 Posted November 22, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted November 22, 2016 Nice work Marve! It's hard to beat that. Does your Camillus 1953 have those whittle marks on the handle? Yes. They are smoothed down a bit, but definitely present. We are referring to what I call "chatter" marks when the cutting tool vibrates a bit on the handle when the handle is turned in the lathe. This seems to be typical on the 1953 contract Camillus M4. Marv
SKIPH Posted November 22, 2016 Share #5 Posted November 22, 2016 Marv-Great collection! The wooden gripped M4 still eludes me. Most I see around are way overpriced. Thanks for showing! SKIP
thorin6 Posted November 23, 2016 Share #6 Posted November 23, 2016 Great grouping. At one time I had all the variants of M4s except for a blade marked one and one with aluminum grips. Kept a few and sold off most of them when I moved away from collecting M1 carbines and accessories. Seeing these almost (but not quite) makes me want to collect some more of them. SKIP I don't have many bayos but I'm starting to change my focus towards them with a bit more seriousness. I was lucky enough to stumble across a wood handled Utica a few years ago in a little out of the way gunstore. The owner was a nice guy and he knew I was interested in old stuff and sold it to me pretty cheaply, I knew it was a good find but I didn't understand HOW GOOD the find was! It's kinda nice to have something that's hard to find that you can look at while you're trying to find it some brothers & sisters. LoL
SKIPH Posted December 18, 2016 Share #8 Posted December 18, 2016 Something that I have a tendency to forget when it comes to wood gripped M4s, is the fact their actually rebuilds. They were disassembled in either Okinawa, or the Philippines, (or somewhere), pommels, leather grips removed, probably refinished, and rebuilt. Basically they are not original as factory made or issued. But, they are cool, and desirable. I tend to think prices are a little high, but we have to deal with "supply, and demand". SKIP Sir you are exactly correct. But if there was no demand or supply we wouldn't be here would we? LoL
