Proud Kraut Posted October 26, 2016 Share #1 Posted October 26, 2016 No new dio because of space limitations but a small in between project: Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division riding on a British Sherman Firefly with "Hessian Tape" camo somewhere in France in 1944. Will add some more daylight pictures tomorrow. Enjoy.

Patchcollector Posted October 27, 2016 Share #6 Posted October 27, 2016 Nicely done.Interesting that the figurines included a French lady that,as shown by her shaved head, had "been" with the enemy.
ArtyScout Posted October 27, 2016 Share #7 Posted October 27, 2016 Nice job on the Sherman and the paratroopers. This is the first tank I've ever seen with the "Hessian Tape". Are the Screaming Eagles patches Verlinden decals? They really look good. BTW I do have one question. Is the driver of the tank able to see where he is going? I don't see the vision slits. Semper Fi. Proud Kraut Posted October 28, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted October 28, 2016 Thank you all very much for your kind feedback, I appreciate it! @Manny: Good point with the driver's vision slits. I'm afraid he's almost blind the way the front figures are placed...but they have a very competent tank commander I did not found many informations about the "Hessian Tape" camo either, especially NO color pictures. So my colors are not more than a modeler's impression. The insignia (flags & 101st Airborne patches) are no decals. I tried to paint them direct on the uniform with varying success. Some more close ups as promised:

Old Marine Posted November 1, 2016 Share #13 Posted November 1, 2016 Ausgezeichnet! The painting is terrific. You did an outstanding job as usual. How did you make the hessian strips and the sand bags?
Proud Kraut Posted November 1, 2016 Author Share #14 Posted November 1, 2016 Thanks again everybody for their kind remarks - Danke! @Dennis: The "Hessian Tape" (would love to know the origin of this designation) is part of a BLACK DOG resin upgrade set for the Firefly. There are different sets available. Not cheap at all but well worth the money. This was the larger set and the last one available online over here, so I couldn't resist. ArtyScout Posted November 4, 2016 Share #15 Posted November 4, 2016 Hey Lars, You're a better man than me. I have the Verlinden 101st Airborne patches, and that would have been the route I would go. But you did a pretty nice job going freehand. Semper Fi. Manny

jfecteau99 Posted November 4, 2016 Share #17 Posted November 4, 2016 Hi Lars, Was this setup inspired by the very similar scene in the mini-series 'Band of Brothers'? Or a photo? Just curious. Jim

Manny @Manny: Thanks, mate but referring to modeling "better" or "poorer" are unimportant categories IMHO. Having fun is all that counts (and I'm pretty sure your Verlinden decals look much better than my handpainted insignia do ;-) @Kat: Thanks for your nice comment! @jfecteau99: That's amazing! I wasn't aware of this scene. It really seems that MB copied exact the same setting. Thank you very much for sharing the picture!
38Driver Posted November 5, 2016 Share #20 Posted November 5, 2016 Interesting that it's sold as 101st with Brit Sherman in France, when the time the 101st operated with British Tanks was Market-Garden in Holland. The uniforms etc are from that time period as well. I don't recall whether the Dutch shaved collaborator heads too. Fantastic modeling work. I've always had a soft spot for the Sherman Firefly
Proud Kraut Posted November 6, 2016 Author Share #21 Posted November 6, 2016 Hey 38Driver, that's an interesting point. So it rather would have taken place in the Netherlands than in France. I must assume, I have not thought about it. Referring to the shaved heads. Let's say it might have happened everywhere in Europe then. Thank you! Backtheattack Posted November 6, 2016 Share #22 Posted November 6, 2016 Lars, hessian is nothing than an other name for "burlap", a woven fabric made from skin of the jute plant. Seems they use the fabrication as part of the uniform.

jfecteau99 Posted November 6, 2016 Share #24 Posted November 6, 2016 The picture I posted was from the 'Band of Brothers' episode 'Replacements'. It dealt with Operation Market Garden and the scene in the picture was of troops moving along the road to Nuenen.
