This one was traded a while back to a friend, but it's still "in the family" so to speak...

Living next to Camp Pendleton I must say has not produced much in the way of vintage helmets, in fact the only WWII helmet covers I have found are the ones with the mosquito nets on them. I have found a few with Vietnam era covers, a bucnch of kevalrs with woodland camo covers and even some of the modern lightweight helmets the Marines now use. I keep hoping that one day a salty M1 with WWII cover will show up, but in the meantime, this newer one came out of the woodwork with authentic writing on it: this unit was not in Vietnam and the writing is rather faded, but it's still a nice example of some Marine's helmet cover graffiti:

Hi ! Happy new year !

I have two covers. One with EGA (and two markings "AWB7" and a yellow "8", probably for a lieutenant-colonel (code 7 in the USMC) whose initials were A.W.B., 8th Marine Regiment):

And one without:

Joined a while back, and thought I'd attempt a post. Recent addition to my collection, Guadalcanal helmet of Lt. Francis Augustine, [i]1st Aviation Engineer Battalion, USMC. - Shell is a short-strap Mchord, liner a 1st pattern Hawley. He retired a Lt. Col in 1958. Obtained the helmet and numerous attributed items from his son.

I've owned a couple of other early USMC M1 helmets with similar characteristics; one of which probably doesn't show in the photos, but the shell is repainted to USMC vehicle-green. Being an aviation engineer, he didn't wear his helmet as much as many others, manly pith helmet and o'seas cap. So this helmet is 90% plus condition. I've been after it for a couple of years, and finally brought it home last week !

I'll try posting a couple more shots !!

Best regards to all, ....Paul (Sgt. Boghots)
