BILL THE PATCH Posted October 24, 2016 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2016 Here is a re sent Ike, shirt, pants belonging to a Walter osterhout, I went to Nara and there is only one osterhout listed, his serial # matched the last 4 in shirt. The Ike is missing all brass and ribbons, but has Sargent stripes, 36 I'd on right shoulder, eto advanced base on left. Shirt has same patches, also have a award from VFW for a silver star. Not the valor award but some sought of disability. Not sure if he was wounded. But if anyone can shed any more Info on this soldier I would be very thankful. I hope to restore this someday. Hopefully files didn't burn up.

Indexred Posted October 24, 2016 Share #7 Posted October 24, 2016 Sergeant Walter W. Osterhout (32947355) served with the 143rd Infantry, and he was wounded by a shell fragment on December 12, 1944. The projectile perforated his small intestine, and he spent 55 days hospitalized before returning to duty in February 1945.

Squad leader Posted October 25, 2016 Share #11 Posted October 25, 2016 He was in M/143. He is listed in the 36th division roster on page 129. Very interesting grouping. Dan.

Squad leader Posted October 25, 2016 Share #13 Posted October 25, 2016 Bill, You should ask on the 36th ID if they have further info on Sgt Osterhout. Here is the link: http://texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.yuku.com/forums/1/36th-Infantry-Division/36th-Infantry-Division#.WA-0kdSLSHs Dan.
jguy1986 Posted October 25, 2016 Share #14 Posted October 25, 2016 Dan, Is there a list of PH recipients on the site? I have a jacket from a 36th vet who was wounded twice, but it only has his initials in it. I'd love to try and narrow down the ID if possible. I have a jacket from a 36th vet who was wounded twice, but it only has his initials in it. I'd love to try and narrow down the ID if possible. Sadly, there is no list of PH recipients I've heard of on this site (or elsewere) but PDFs of the After Action Reports and of the 36th ID roster are available. Sometimes the list of the casualties is given in the AAR. Here are the links: AAR: http://texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org/after-action-reports-wwii/ 36th ID roster: http://texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org/36th-infantry-division-roster-wwii/ Hope it helps. Dan. Thanks so much, Dan. When I have a few spare hours I'll sit down and pour over the rosters. I have his three initials, and the general area where the jacket was found in antique store, so hopefully it will narrow down the search among the infantry units.
