Team,

Good morning. I hope this finds everyone doing well. I have been looking for a tanker grouping for years and one finally came up on RIA so I bid on it and won the grouping. Paid a pretty penny so one of my kids can forget about college :-). Since I am a little light on my tanker knowledge - I am looking for a some feedback from those that are more knowledgeable than I am. RIA had the grouping notes as follows -

Uniform set named to a Captain B.T. Hundley of the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, a component of the 2nd Armored Division. ( I can't find him on Ancestry or through records any help would be great)

Captain B.T. Hundley – WWII Grouping

1) A.G. Spaulding & Bros. Tanker Helmet, size 7 1/2, green plastic and brown leather construction.

2) U.S. M1 Helmet, later pattern shell (swivel bail, rear trim seam) with a textured green/brown paint finish, and a green painted fiberglass liner with green canvas webbing and leather chinstrap. (The M1 shell is correct - (Rear seam swivel bail with F 44 liner)

3) Fine medal grouping, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart (w/ribbon bar, lapel pin and case), World War II Victory Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Ribbon (with four stars) and silver finished Major maple leaf.

4) Dress Jacket, bearing a maker's label from Kahn Tailoring of Indianapolis, outfitted with gilt brass buttons, crossed rifle and "U.S." lapel pins, the 2nd Armored insignia on the left shoulder over 3 service bars, a set of embroidered silver bullion Captain bars along with enamel 41st Infantry insignias on the shoulders, Infantry Blue Cord on the left shoulder (The presence of the post-WWII Infantry Cord is unexplained by consignor notes; many WWII officers served in Korea, and it may have been among the items in Hundley's estate), and an embroidered Combat Infantry Badge over a set of stitched-on ribbons for the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart (with one leaf) and the Europe-Africa-Middle East Medal (four stars). Purple Heart box with Purple Heart medal and medal and pins, Bronze and Silver Star medals.

5) Field jacket, tan construction with the 2nd Armored patch on the shoulder and no maker's marks.

6 ) Tan dress shirt, with "Officer's/ARMY/Shirt" label with tan/gray necktie.

7) Field jacket, olive-drab green construction with brown plastic buttons, 2nd Armored shoulder patch and nickel finished Captain bars. A repeating "L-7971" ink stamp is present on the lining, with some faded hand-added blue ink markings as well.

Since you asked for feedback...

Some good looking items there, but at $4887, IMO, that's way above the "sum of parts" value. I really hope there is some good solid provenance (and legit naming on key items) with the grouping needed to elevate the value to that level.

Agreed it was pricey - Wife not happy - Laundry marks are throughout - what brought me in was the 1st pattern tanker jacket. I am working on tracking down the service records - RIA sent me some documentation. Don't think I will buy from them again - I agree it was more than I thought I would spend.

That's way too much for this grouping, I have a feeling this group has been spiced up cord is definitely postwar.

The cord is postwar - agreed. If and when I get the military records then I will confirm whether or not he was in Korea as well - which is where I think the cord came from - lets see if I took a beating or not.

I am getting the feeling this Group is fabricated, I couldn't find any hits for a captain with this name. I found one individual who was awarded the silver star in the 1st armored division with the same last name different person. For being a captain in a fairly popular unit it doesn't make sense for there not to be any information on him

Ironic thing is, IMO, the cord is so wrong, it's actually a positive. The rest of the IKE looks so good, if it was made up, it would not seem to make sense that whoever had the knowledge and skill to do such a masterful job would have added such a glaringly wrong component to the jacket. (and I'm NOT stating the Ike is "put together"). Could be as alluded to in the auction - all together in the estate and at some point was just innocently added to the Ike.

It's mainly a case of can these jackets and helmets all be convincingly tied to Captain Hundley?

I own it now - figure Rock Island does its homework. The tanker helmet is clearly field worn as is the M1 Helmet and 1st Pattern tanker jacket. Looks like I am going to have hunt down the person who had Rock Island auction it for them. I am confident on the parts - lets see is anything was added. I may be out a couple of thousand but - need to circle back on this one.

This group was sold prior in 2004 from what I have found, the only thing that worries me is there is no reference to any Hundley in the 2nd Armored division. No doubt all the parts of the group Original. I am just wondering would an officer be wearing a tanker helmet ?

Can you show me the info you found on the prior sale from 2004 - I should be paying you at this point :-)

Some "forensic drill-down" wouldn't hurt in getting a better feel for authenticity on the Ike jacket. What kind of clutches are on the metal insignia (i.e.,flat faced or stippled)? What exact hallmark is on the reverse of the 41st Inf DUI's and other metal insignia?
