27Division18 Posted October 15, 2016 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2016 Can anyone tell me if the 310th Motor Repair Unit (Motor Transport Corps) was attached to a particular Division of the US Army in WWI? I know it served in the Third Army, but were these guys divisional troops as well?
Custermen Posted December 23, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 23, 2016 I don't know if this helps but the 85th Infantry Division had support units identified with 310th. Maybe they had a 310 Motor Repair unit in WW1 organization.
jagjetta Posted December 23, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 23, 2016 I believe the 310th was part of the Provisional Motor Transport in Bassenheim. As such, not assigned to a division, but it had some interesting personnel assigned to the unit. A unit history was published in 1919. I am sure I have access to a roster. atb Posted December 24, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 24, 2016 The 310th were assigned as "SOS (Services of Supply) Troops" according to the WW1 Order of Battle published by the US Government. That would have been before any Third Army attachment after the Armistice.
MAW Posted December 24, 2016 Share #5 Posted December 24, 2016 I agree with the above. They would likely have had "advanced sector" or "service of supply" patches as support troops.
jagjetta Posted December 28, 2016 Share #6 Posted December 28, 2016 According to the Unit's History (sorry, I didn't realize I had a copy and not just a roster!), after the 310 MTC (Repair Unit) arrived at Langres, it was farmed out in small units to Dijon, Toul, La Valehof, Sampigney, Is Sur Tille, Vernuiel, St Dizier, Tours, Mailly and Don Jeux. One company remained at Langres. The history goes on to chronicle a brief summary of operations of each of the small detachments. It was reestablished as a unit in Coblenz to manage an overhaul park during the occupation. Interestingly (and now I know why I have this unit history!), on January 4th, the 310th was placed in Large Park of the Third Army Overhaul Park. At this point, the 310th acquired a large group of Tank Corps men who had been held for attached duty at the Overhaul Park. They had been picked out of the Tank Corps based on their mechanical abilities and eventually were assigned to Unit 310. John
