Can't find authorization date on this units DI lasvegas, it will be though around the mid 60s, like 1965 towards the late 60s. This unit, the 5th Artillery Group like all Groups is a Non Color Bearing Unit, or NCBU, they have a Flag but not Colors, therefore they are not entitled to a Distinguishing Unit Insignia.

It was the at this time starting around 1965, that the Army granted Distinguishing Unit Insignia be adopted for those units that were Non Color Bearing, these included High Command Organizations, in example, Continental Army Command, U.S. Army Europe etc, Followed by Armies IE 1st Army, 2nd Army, 3rd Army etc, followed by Corps IE I Corps, III Corps etc, then came the Combat Divisions themselves, apart from most National Guard Divisions, Headquarters of the majority of divisions had no DIs, because unlike the Battalions within them, are not Color Bearing. Then come Separate Combat Brigades of the Regular Army and Reserve Components, they too Begin to receive DIs of their own, Separate Combat Support/Support Brigades too.
