RedLegGI Posted September 27, 2016 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2016 Sometimes you walk in to a surplus store expecting to find your main field of collecting, and walk out with something completely different. That happened to me yesterday as I was hunting OEF/OIF items and came out with two uniforms, and a pair of pants, dating to 1910 and 1913. Both tops named to G.W.C. Whiting and the pants completely lacking any form of identification. Checking online, I was surprised at how much information I was able to find. Whiting, born November 28, 1885 graduates VMI in the class of 1906. In the official VMI register from the 1907-1908 Whiting is listed as "Captain G.W.C. Whiting, Assistant Professor of English and History". The next information puts Whiting in Nebraska with the 4th Infantry Regiment "Whiting, George W.C.,2lt. 4 inf., Ft. Crook, Nebr." This rank along with the insignia on the sleeve cuffs, and tailor tag information, matches exactly to this time period. Why he is a back to being a 2lt from capt, is not something I'm familiar with, so maybe the experts could weigh in. From there I'm not sure where whiting goes, but he pops up again in 1916 getting promoted from 2nd to first lit and then April of 1918 in the Omaha Register newspaper. There is a Story about Captain Whiting working with the 41st Infantry U.S.A. from about 6 months prior (October/November 1917). The very last thing I've found about Whiting is that he is selected in 1921 to attend "The School of The Line" as a Colonel.

sundance Posted September 28, 2016 Share #12 Posted September 28, 2016 Great uniforms. You have to grab something that nice even if it isn't your area. Then, of course, it grows on you and you're hooked on something else.
