Good evening. Was fortunate enough to pick up this grouping. It came out of the same home of a 63d Infantry Division grouping I was able to obtain. It appears to me this is an occupation grouping based on the dog tag date (T46), regimental patches, etc. In addition the glider wings are marked 1946 Sental Japan. A question I have for better educated members is would someone who joined post war be glider as well as airborne qualified? I'm trying to reach back to the family to obtain more info on Mr Roberts service to include if he served in Korea.

I look forward to and welcome any comments/information concerning the items and/or Mr. Roberts service. I'm particularly interested in information on the patches to include what appears to me to be an oversized glider cap patch (?). Additionally what does the ER before his ASN stand for on the T50 tags. Thanks.

It was/is my understanding when speaking with some 11th Airborne veterans that while on occupation duty in Japan they had both a Jump School and a Glider school and the men were eligible for Glider wings after a ride in a glider. I think the requirements were significantly changed from the WW2 requirements vs. occupation time..

I will reconfirm this later when I have a chance to look through my 11th Airborne occupation books

Good Afternoon,

First and foremost thanks for the comments, information, and assistance provided. Mr. Roberts' middle initial is C. I found a 11th ABN website with many Don Roberts but haven't matched up the middle initial yet as well. I've taken some better pictures below. Not my area of expertise but looks like the regimental and glider patch are Japanese made along with the glider wings. Are any of the other patches, jump wings, or DUI Japanese made or are they "standard" issue? Thanks again for all the help.

Jeff,

Here is more information reference the glider wings and airborne wings.

During the occupation period in Japan and in the summer of 1946, the 11th Airborne Division was working under new War Department policies and old Division policies that each airborne man assigned to the 11th Airborne would be both paratrooper and glider qualified. The division opened up an airborne school at Yamoto airstrip, renamed Carolus Field after a glider trooper who was killed in a glider accident in Manila Bay in July 1945. The airborne school was capable of handling one battalion at a time for a 2 week course. Since most of the men in the division were airborne qualified, they would make a mass jump at the school and then they would conduct a ground field problem. The 2 week period was spent in loading and lashing gliders, in pathfinder operations, jumpmaster school for selected individuals and tactical glider flights. At the end of the 2 week training all men in the battalion became qualified glidermen, regardless of whether they made a flight or not, all were qualified in glider loading and all were well versed in glider operations. Upon completion the men were awarded the glider wings.

You have a wonderful grouping with some beautiful patches and wings..
