Gliders - Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, Texas

I spoke with a gentleman who was part of a crew flying as the navigator in a radar-jamming B-17 during the Sicily glider invasion. He said during the mission he could tell that the wings had shifted 180 degrees from what had been forecasted before the mission, so instead of releasing the gliders with a tail wind they released them directly into a headwind. Because they had to maintain radio silence he could not warn the tow pilots about the wind and could only watch as the gliders were released and so many landed short of the island.
