As the topic mentions this is my first addition to my collection from the Indian War period. My limited knowledge is that this plate would be for a M1881 helmet and that it is enlisted as it is not a two piece construction. Sadly the piece is missing the wire loops at each of the three spots. I will say that when I was doing some research that I found more Cavalry plates than Artillery. Are Cavalry more or less common than Artillery plates or vice versa?

Furthermore the 4th Artillery was the most widely used regiment. Some batteries of this regiment accompanied expeditions, while others fought as cavalry or infantry as well as cannoneers. Campaigns that they fought in would include the Modoc War, Nez Perce War, Sioux Wars, and the Bannock War.

Thanks for looking

Call is a m1881 front plate; not a shako plate. I confirm you have an enlisted front plate. If you're looking for more indian war helmet items, please let me know as I am thinning out my collection.
