kfields Posted September 7, 2016 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2016 I picked these up at the monthly flea market held at a rural fairgrounds close to me here in Ohio. They didn't cost much so the decision was easy. This is the first set I have owned that had one of the square tags. I asked the seller if he had any history on the guy or where the guy was from but unfortunately he did not. A couple of things lead me to the conclusion this might possibly have belonged to a First Division soldier: 1.) First the obvious. A square tag that most likely was issued to a soldier who came over to France early and we now the First Division came over early; 2.) A low serial number. I think the First Division infantry guys were issued very low serial numbers under 100,000; 3.) The tag has the infantry designation with the number "pinged" out. I can make out Company "A" but I can't quite make out the regiment. I think it is a two digit regiment based on the limited space between the "A" and Infantry. I can almost make out the ghost of the numbers "28" but can't say for sure. Does anyone have any thoughts about these tags? Thanks! Kim

There is a fellow from Kentucky who might fit the bill but I am not sure about that I will check ancestry when I get of work later. And a very nice set of tags if you ever want to trade I got a set you might be interested in.

muddyboots Posted September 7, 2016 Share #4 Posted September 7, 2016 I found a Chester Arthur Combs that was born in Kentucky in 1890 and died in Springfield Ohio in 1977. I have not seen him in Ohio soldiers of WW1. I will keep looking when I get more time latter.

kfields Posted September 9, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted September 9, 2017 It has been one year since I found the set of tags above and now I found a set today for another 1st Infantry Division soldier at a gunshow for $50! These belonged to medic: Henry T. Buttermore, SN: 2295, I believe the meaning of A.C. 2 is: 2nd Ambulance Company. I don't believe the dealer had any knowledge (or interest) in knowing that this fellow was part of the 1st Division. Here are some pictures: Kim

gauthieb3sxz Posted October 11, 2017 Share #13 Posted October 11, 2017 Finding shots of guys wearing both is nearly impossible. I have literally thousands of WWI studio photos and only ONE shot of this set up. Dog tag shots are super hard to find in general...

kfields Posted December 31, 2018 Author Share #15 Posted December 31, 2018 I've been trying to clean up some of my old photobucket links by reposting the actual images. I was trying to figure out where I posted these tags before and couldn't find it so I figure I would post them here, maybe for the first time. I bought these, maybe 15 years ago, at the monthly antique show in Urbana, Ohio. Obviously they belonged to a fellow named Luther Hahn who was with the 16th Infantry, and were made from some really old 19th century coins. I have a really weak spot for the 1st Division as that was the Division (16th Infantry) I was assigned to way back when. Thought I would share in the same/similar thread.
