The markings on the bottom are 1964, M109, 120mm, Lot NOR 1-2. I would like to purchase an inert round or try to make something that would make this round look complete. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Hello,

Larger projectiles are a bit hard to find. Some people have made replicas on a wood lathe. In today's world, shipping something like that can attract attention, even if inert. If you like things like this, you should look up the British Ordnance Collectors Network website, it is great! And it is international in scope.

Enjoy your shell!

Thanks US Military Guy. That work is impressive, but I don't quite have those skills?. Would anyone happen to have a pic of what the projectile would look like? I've searched the Internet but really don't know what to look for. Thanks again

I'm still confused on this casing. Not sure what the projectile that accompanies it looks like as I haven't been able to find a picture of one on the web. Also, what artillery piece would something this big have been fired from? The casing stands about 33" tall.

Photos would help a bunch, if you can.

I tried to find information too - and I could not find anything.

I might have better luck with photos.

This one has me rather stumped. I have tried my "normal" resources, but come up pretty much blank.

The best I found was this - http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/21255-nylon-driving-bands?highlight=M109+120mm

Possibly post number 6 in that topic?

Lots of luck and please post anything you discover. I am following. :)

The case is, I think, the same as used in the WWII 120mm anti-aircraft gun. But I'm sure that gun was obsolete by 1964 and your case is probably from the USMC M103 heavy tank.

It looks like you are correct. :)

Separate loaded round = no projectile inserted into case (check under the "Armament" section") http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwar/US/M103_Heavy_Tank.php

Awesome! Thanks for everyone's help! I'm still confused as to why M109 is stamped on the casing. Also, I would still like to acquire a projectile or a look a like to compliment this casing.

  • 3 years later...

Here are a few of mine. Both AP-T projectiles...one black AP made of heat treated steel, and the blue practice round, made of mild steel. Seperate loaded rounds for our heavy tank. Two loaders, one loaded the 60 lb projectile, the other loaded the huge powder filled brass case.post-180924-0-37312700-1582609309_thumb.jpeg

I posted this awhile back. Gun used by our obscure little known M103 heavy tank, we took our WW2 AA Stratosphere gun and mounted it on a tank. Projectiles are out there, AP the most common, HE very hard to find. A well ink marked AP one brings about $250 plus a lot in shipping, HE never seen one for sale, but I have seen the fuze for one, it brought about $300.
